'NRK celebrate another successful year on the house music scene with their seventh label compilation featuring hot tracks from the likes of Miguel Migs, Nick Holder, Joey Negro and David Alvarado. A bonus mix CD from H-Foundation’s Hipp-e is included in this package.
Another year, another slew of fine releases from one of the world’s top house labels. NRK have ruled the roost on the underground scene since it started in 1997, and as the label get set to celebrate 100 12 releases, ‘Singles 7’ is a timely reminder that quality house music still exists! A label that have always had an ear for a great record, and also an eye for the next hottest artist, NRK Singles 7 includes many label regulars including Miguel Migs, Nick Holder and Joey Negro, as well as newer producers such as Rulers Of The Deep and Magik Johnson.
Miguel Migs’ sun-drenched productions always prove to be a winner, and ‘Singles 7’ includes two cuts from his recent ‘City Sounds’ triology. ‘Making Moves’ has crisp percussion and warm bass (well, what do you expect from Miguel!), Rhodes chords and summery vibes that lifts this track really well. “Don’t Stand There is a somewhat deeper excursion with some hypnotic chords and meaty bass weaving its way around some crunchy drums. Nick Holder is another artist who has developed his sound through NRK singles. Holder’s ‘No More Dating DJs’ received amazing support from Radio 1’s Giles Peterson and Trevor Nelson as well as the likes of Mr. Scruff and Patrick Forge and most recently won an award for ‘Best spoken word recording’ at Canada’s Urban Music Awards. John Ciafone from the legendary Mood II Swing supplies a beautiful skippy house version that utilises the full vocal lyric from Jemini. Harmonic 33 (AKA Jedi Knight’s Mark Pritchard) lays down a very tasty hip hop tempo mixes of ‘History In The Making’.
Magik Johnson has two tracks represented on this compilation, proving NRK’s faith in its new artists. ‘Feel Alright’ is a brooding deep houser with a fantastic vocal hook that will appeal to those who like there house music fromage free! A crisp production with driving melodies make this one a winner, and the dub mix on the flip is rather tasty too. ‘Something For You’ is an acidic groover with shades of classic Chicago house whilst ‘African Dream’ is an atmospheric slice of deep house. Joey Negro received the remix treatment from Yoshitoshi faves, Skylark. “Don’t Hold Back has been a huge record on the scene, with Pete Tong hammering it on radio and a legion of DJs placing this one firmly at the front of their boxes.
Elsewhere on this comp are recent cuts from LA’s master of minimalism, David Alvarado, and the Estonian deep house duo, Rulers Of The Deep.
Included with this package is a bonus mix CD from Hipp-e, otherwise known as one half of West Coast house giants, H-Foundation. Hipp-e has now signed to NRK for a singles deal for 2005, and it seemed fitting to get the popular DJ in to mix up a selection of NRK’s finest moments from 2004.
